Branchline Passenger & Lightweight
Industrial Shunter, LNER Class J79

PROTOTYPE. The North Eastern Railway built this class of three locomotives for branchline passenger & light shunting work. They became LNER Class J79. During the mid 1930s all three were sold to industrial users with one lasting until 1957 at British Sugar Corporations Cantley Factory.

KIT. The main body and chassis components are etched in brass and the fit of all components on this uncomplicated locomotive is very good. Instructions are well illustrated with exploded diagrams & photographs complemented by text detailing construction.

The kit has recently been refurbished with new casting moulds made and new desk top published instructions produced. These improvements make it an ideal kit as a progression from or alternative to the starter loco.

If these are desired as an alternative to the wire wiper pickups that are included in the kit. I would recommend the type produced by Slater's and provision is made in the kit chassis for fitting these (Slater's Cat No 7157).

Downloading the instruction booklet will allow you to evaluate the kit and its construction and help you to determine its suitability for yourself and your project. The booklet is made up of two parts :-
Download Etched and Cast Parts Identification Sheets
These are individual A4 sheets that identify and number in assembly order all the etched parts and have photographs of each casting, identifying them by name and listing the quantity of each. There is also a selection of photographs of a finished model taken from different angles.
I would recommend downloading and opening these sheets first as it will be almost as exciting as opening the real kit box and handling all the parts.
Download Assembly Instruction Booklet
The booklet is designed to print as two A5 pages printed on each side of an A4 sheet of paper (set printer for landscape). Staple the A4 sheets in the centre and fold to form an A5 booklet.
Print each A4 page individually (set your printer for current page only). Then print the first pdf page containing booklet pages 1 (front cover) & 32 on an A4 sheet of paper. Turn the printed paper over and print the second pdf page containing booklet pages 2 & 31 on the other side. Then on another sheet of paper print the third pdf page containing booklet pages 3 & 30 and so on until you reach the booklet centre pages 16 & 17.
